It costs £5,000 a year for one therapist to work one day a week on the wards with patients, their families and the staff where they provide emotional and physical support, supporting patients from diagnosis to journeys end and these treatments are available both within the Acute Cancer Care Unit and the Outpatient’s Department at University College Hospital (UCH) where Angie Buxton-King, now employed by the NHS as a healer working on the adult haematology unit, saw how the holistic model of care was so important in her own son Sam’s journey through cancer.

Angie now manages this unique team at UCH and she and her healer husband Graham King, have become the first full time healers within the NHS and been enormous help to many children and their carers who have received treatments. This year she created a charity, “The Sam Buxton Sunflower Healing Trust” in memory of her son who died in 1998 of Acute Myeloid Leukaemia aged ten, with the aim of raising funds to provide complimentary therapy to cancer patients in the UK; initially in the form of healers, either spiritual healers, reiki practitioners or therapeutic touch practitioner and if funds allow, they will seek to provide what has seen to be core therapies within their trust; healing, reflexology and aromatherapy massage.

Graham and Angie’s work has inspired Jacky Paice (wife of Ian Paice of Deep Purple) and some of her friends, to support their vision and to help raise funds for therapists for the for The Sam Buxton Sunflower Healing Trust which is supported by HRH The Prince’s Foundation for Integrated Health through an intimate rock ‘n’ roll charity evening of dinner and musical entertainment on September 14th at The Porchester Halls, London W2.
